Looking for the perfect way to get your little ones hooked on fishing? Captain Mikey's 2-hour kids fishing adventure in Clearwater Beach is exactly what you need. This isn't just another fishing trip - it's designed specifically for young anglers who want to experience the magic of catching their first fish in Florida's crystal-clear Gulf waters. With a maximum of just 2 guests, your family gets personalized attention that makes all the difference when you're dealing with excited kids and fishing lines.
Captain Mikey knows exactly how to keep kids engaged without overwhelming them. The 2-hour timeframe is perfect - long enough for real fishing action but short enough before the little ones get restless. You'll head out into Clearwater's protected inshore waters where the fish are plentiful and the conditions are calm. The captain handles all the technical stuff like baiting hooks, setting lines, and netting fish, so parents can actually relax and watch their kids light up when that rod bends. Don't worry about bringing anything - all the gear, bait, and safety equipment is provided. Captain Mikey even cleans and fillets your catch, plus he knows the best local spots where restaurants will cook up your fish for dinner.
This trip focuses on inshore fishing techniques that are perfect for beginners. You'll be using light tackle that's sized right for small hands, typically fishing with live shrimp or small baitfish around grass flats, mangrove shorelines, and shallow reefs. Captain Mikey uses a combination of drift fishing and anchor fishing depending on what's biting. The boat stays in protected waters - usually 3 to 8 feet deep - where kids can actually see the fish they're trying to catch. This visual element keeps them engaged and helps them understand what's happening below the surface. The captain's constantly moving between spots to keep the action going, because nothing kills a kid's enthusiasm faster than sitting without a bite for too long.
"Captain Mikey and his first mate were fantastic! We had a great time! My four year old wanted to be a big helper and they made him feel extra special and they were so patient with him. I wanted to catch a big fish after catching some small ones and they took us to an extra spot so I could reel in a big one! Thank you for a great time!" - Kristin
"Really enjoyed it! 2 hours is the perfect timeframe for 2 little kids. Captain Mike took good care of us so the whole trip was easy!" - Jill
"I can't say enough good things about our experience! It was great for my 3 young kids! And they all caught plenty of fish!" - Hanna Larimore
Redfish are the crown jewel of Clearwater's inshore waters and absolute favorites with kids. These copper-colored beauties typically run 18 to 27 inches around here and put up just the right amount of fight - enough to get excited about without overwhelming young anglers. They're most active during moving tides and love hanging around oyster bars and grass flats. What kids love most is that redfish are curious and often cruise in shallow water where you can actually spot them before casting. Fall and winter months are prime time, but honestly, Clearwater's year-round fishery means there's always a good shot at hooking one.
Snook might be the coolest-looking fish your kids will ever catch. With their distinctive black lateral line and that prehistoric-looking snout, they're like something out of a nature documentary. They typically range from 20 to 28 inches in these waters and are known for their acrobatic jumps when hooked. Snook love structure - docks, mangroves, and bridge pilings are their favorite hangouts. They're most active during warmer months from spring through early fall, and they're ambush predators, so strikes often come fast and hard. Kids go crazy when they see a snook explode on their bait.
Grey Snapper are the workhorses of this fishery and probably what your kids will catch most of. Don't let that fool you into thinking they're boring - these scrappy fighters punch way above their weight class. Most run 12 to 16 inches, perfect for young hands to manage. They school up around structure and are active year-round, making them reliable targets when other species are finicky. Grey snapper are also fantastic table fare, so your kids will love eating what they caught. They're curious fish that often come right up to the boat, giving kids a great look at their catch before release.
Tripletail are the wild cards that make every trip exciting. These oddly-shaped fish look like floating leaves and are masters of camouflage. They're usually found around floating debris, channel markers, or even free-floating in open water. What makes them special is their size - most run 15 to 20 inches but can get much larger. They're year-round residents but peak in summer and fall. Kids love tripletail because they're so unusual looking and because they often float right at the surface where you can see them before casting. Landing one is always a highlight of any trip.
Gag Grouper are the bottom dwellers that give kids a real taste of serious fishing. These chunky fighters typically run 16 to 24 inches in the shallower waters where Captain Mikey takes families. They hang around hard bottom, artificial reefs, and rock piles. What's exciting about gag grouper is their power - they'll dive straight for structure when hooked, giving kids a real tug-of-war experience. They're most cooperative during cooler months but can be caught year-round. Plus, they're considered some of the best eating fish in the Gulf, so dinner is guaranteed when you land one.

Captain Michael was great in every area including communication, teaching and more. He took care of my boys the entire time while making sure their hooks were set and casting. We were able to catch a number of fish which he also filleted for us. I would highly recommend.

Captain Mike was great with my son and always made sure the lines were ready with bait. Even with the wind and waves we still caught some neat fish. We will definitely book with him again when we are back in Clearwater.

Gag grouper are solid fighters that live around rocky structure and hard bottom in 20-100 feet of water. Most run 5-15 pounds, but bigger ones push 30-plus. They love hanging around reefs, wrecks, and ledges where they can ambush baitfish. Best fishing happens during cooler months when they move inshore to spawn. What guests love is the hard initial run when hooked - they'll try to drag you straight back to their rocky hideout. The eating quality is top-notch with firm, white meat that's perfect for kids who don't like "fishy" fish. Live pinfish and cut bait work great, but here's the secret - once you hook up, keep that rod tip low and crank hard immediately. Don't give them a chance to get back in the rocks or you'll lose them every time.

Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are smart fish that make great targets for patient young anglers. They typically run 1-3 pounds inshore, with their greyish-red color and that dark stripe through the eye. You'll find them around docks, bridges, and mangrove edges in 5-30 feet of water. They're year-round residents but feed most actively during warmer months and around full moons. Kids enjoy them because they're steady fighters without being overwhelming, and the white, flaky meat is some of the best eating around. Live shrimp works best - hook it through the tail to keep it lively. The secret is patience - drop your bait to the bottom, reel up a turn, and wait. They're opportunistic but cautious, so avoid jerky movements that spook them off your bait.

Redfish are perfect for kids because they hang out in super shallow water - sometimes so shallow their backs stick out! These copper-colored fish with the distinctive black spots near their tail average 20-30 inches around Clearwater. You'll find them cruising grass flats, around docks, and oyster bars in 1-4 feet of water. They're not picky eaters and will hit live shrimp, cut bait, or artificial lures. Spring through fall gives you the best action when water temps are warm. Kids love them because they fight hard but aren't too tough to handle, plus they taste great on the table. Here's the trick - when you spot one, cast past it and slowly work your bait in front of their nose. They spook easy if you land right on top of them.

Snook are the perfect inshore game fish - they hit hard, jump high, and put up a great fight in shallow water. Most of our fish run 18-28 inches with that distinctive black lateral line down their side. You'll find them around docks, mangroves, and bridge pilings in 2-10 feet of water. They love ambush spots with current flow. Peak season runs May through September when they're most active and feeding heavily. Kids get hooked on the explosive strikes and aerial shows these fish put on. They're also excellent table fare with sweet, flaky white meat. Live shrimp and small pinfish are hard to beat, but topwater plugs at dawn create heart-stopping action. Pro tip - keep steady pressure but don't horse them. Let them make their runs and tire out, or they'll throw the hook with their head shakes.

Tripletail are one of the coolest fish to target because they float on their sides near the surface, looking like floating debris. Most run 2-5 pounds, but you might hook into a 15-pounder. They love hanging around buoys, weed lines, and any floating structure in 10-50 feet of water. Summer through early fall is prime time when water temps stay above 70 degrees. What makes them special is their acrobatic fight - they jump and shake like crazy for such a stocky fish. Plus, the meat rivals red snapper for taste. The key to catching them is stealth - once you spot one floating, cast well away from it and slowly drag your shrimp or crab toward them. Get too close with your cast and they'll disappear in a flash.
